2 Key Issues That May Affect PDP In 2023

Two key issues may affect the performance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2023 general election. People have been thinking that the opposition party will be able to challenge the power of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in this coming election, but things have not been rosy for the opposition party in many ramifications. People are expecting many things from the opposition party, but the party seems to be powerless because of multiple problems that are affecting the progress of the party.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has once ruled the country for sixteen years before the establishment of the newly formed All Progressive Congress (APC)) in the year twenty thirteen. The major stronghold aim of the All Progressive Congress (APC) is to unseat the government of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan's administration. The newly formed party succeeded, and the opposition party lost the mantle of leadership in Nigeria till now.

The top members of the party have been making various attempts to gain back what the party has lost in terms of power and political strength, but their attempts so far have proven abortive. The next opportunity to reclaim the lost mantle of leadership is by winning the upcoming presidential election but the party may still lose because of two reasons. The performance of the opposition party may be affected based on these two key issues that will be discussed below.

Internal Crises

The first key issue that may affect the party is the issue of internal crises among the leaders of the party. There have been many opposing ideologies from the politicians from the southern part of the country and those who are from the northern part of the country. The southerners are very conservative because they believe that rules and conventions should be duly followed. The northerners on the other hand have different opinions.

The southern governors requested to produce the next presidential candidate of the party and the northerners outrightly rejected it based on the fact that the zoning system is unconstitutional to the members of the party. Also, they believe in competency to choose the next flag bearer of the opposition party. If these two factions continue like this, the opposition party may lose the next presidential election.

Another major issue that may affect the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming presidential election is the defection of the top members of the party. The opposition party has witnessed many cases where a politician will vacate the party to join the All Progressive Congress (APC). The consequence of defection is that it reduces the strength of the opposition party and strengthens the power of the ruling party. Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi, Benedict Ayade, Bello Matawalle and Chief Femi Fani-Kayode are the members of the opposition party that have joined the ruling party.
