Although the party has zoned its national chairmanship to the North, Loyalists of Atiku Abubakar and Bukola Saraki still believe that they can turn things around in their favour. According to This Day newspaper, Atiku and Saraki's loyalists plot to control the machinery of PDP to ensure that the 2023 presidential candidate of the party is a Northerner.

To start with Saraki and Atiku contested the 2019 presidential ticket of the PDP. While Atiku clinched it, Saraki lost and led the campaign of Atiku.
However, the loyalists of these two politicians plot to take advantage of the National Convention to ensure that members who can support a Northern presidential candidate occupy key NWC oppositions. Already they are in support of two leading candidates, David Mark and Sule Lamido.
The influence of the National Chairman of a political party cannot be underrated when it comes to working for the emergence of a presidential candidate.
Atiku and Saraki's loyalists are working for someone who can protect the political interests of their principals. One may wonder why Atiku and Saraki's political loyalists are more focused on the 2023 presidential ticket of the PDP when Atiku or Saraki have not declare interest in the 2023 presidential election.
The answer is not far fetched. They understand that grabbing the 2023 presidential ticket of the PDP will be tough because Southern PDP politicians are much interested in it since the party has zoned the chairmanship to the North.

The National Convention of the PDP is on the 30th and 31st of this month. We wait to see which of the Northern politicians will emerge as the next PDP National Chairman.
