Check Out 2 Major Reasons Why Buhari May Not Support Tinubu to Become APC’s Presidential Candidate

As the clock gradually ticks closer to 2023, the Nigerian political landscape is becoming more intense. All the major political parties are laser focused on creating the best electoral strategies that will lift their candidates to success during the elections.

And one of the best strategies for winning an election is fielding a strong candidate. This explains why many analysts strongly tips former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu as the likely flagbearer for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In this regard, two factors favour Tinubu. Firstly, APC has a binding North –South power rotation agreement, and it will be the turn of the South to produce the party’s flagbearer in 2023. Secondly, Tinubu is unarguably the most influential Southern political figure in the party. It is unlikely that any other southern politician in the party can defeat him in a free and fair primary process.

But President Buhari, who is arguably the ultimate decider of who gets the ticket, appears not to be impressed with Tinubu’s candidacy. According to a report in Tribune Newspaper, Buhari has already mandated his close aides to begin the search for what he has described as a legacy candidate.

A source who spoke to Tribune noted that the president prefers that the legacy candidate should be a Southern Christian. This apparently knocks Tinubu out of consideration for the APC’s presidential ticket on religious grounds.

Another criterion that may disqualify Tinubu is the insistence on ‘legacy candidate’. The report noted that what this means is that the candidate must be able to protect and preserve some of the projects and policies that are dear to the heart of the Buhari administration.

That means whoever is eventually picked to lead APC’s ticket must be able to continue Buhari’s investment in agriculture, rail, transportation etc. The person must also share the President’s vision and passion for Nigeria’s socio-economic development.

Several stakeholders and groups within the APC have insisted that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is in a better position to emerge as a legacy candidate because he has been a key part of the Buhari government from inception.

Besides, Osinbajo has been the leader of Buhari’s economic recovery efforts and social investment initiatives.

Therefore, on these two criteria, he is better qualified than Tinubu to get the President’s endorsement.

More so, the President is leaving nothing to chance, he is said to be personally involved in the process because he is passionate about protecting his legacies in office.
