[Opinion] Why Fielding a Southern Presidential Candidate Would Cost APC The 2023 Presidency

Despite the raging debate between the North and Southern regions, over where the next President of Nigeria should come from, the forthcoming 2023 presidential election is undoubtedly a battle between the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The two political parties are known to be the largest in the country, and stand a better chance of emerging victorious at the 2023 general elections.

This has seen the attention of those demanding for the zoning of the 2023 Presidency to a particular region, focused on the APC, and the PDP. However, the two parties appear to be more interested in winning the 2023 presidential election, than the region where the candidate comes from. With this in mind, one may not be wrong to say that the APC, and PDP would weigh their options carefully before adopting a particular candidate for the election.

Arguably, the APC as the ruling political party in the country, has an edge over the PDP going into the 2023 presidential election. However, I am of the view that fielding a Southern candidate in the 2023 presidential election, would cost the party the 2023 Presidency. There is no doubt that there are several capable hands from the Southern region who can effectively pilot the affairs of the country.

However, a critical look at recent developments within the PDP, suggests that there are chances that the party would field a Northerner as its candidate for the 2023 election. Arguably, this could be a big threat to the APC if the party fields a Southerner as its candidate for the 2023 presidential election. This is due to the fact that the Northern region could use its large population to support a candidate from the region.

This can be argued to have become more likely now that the two regions have been at loggerheads over the issue of zoning of the 2023 Presidency to a particular region. Recall that not long ago, the Spokesperson of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, alleged that heaven will not fall if a Northerner is elected as president in 2023.

As obtained from the Daily Post, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed went on to allege that the North has the population to win the 2023 presidential election. This can be argued to have suggested that the region is just as interested in the 2023 Presidency, like the Southern region. With this in mind, one may not be wrong to argue that should the APC field a Southern candidate, the North is likely to opt for another candidate from the region, using its larger population to win the election.
