Is This Still the Same Buhari We Voted For?

This article will begin with a very important warning to those who see every criticism as an attack against the government of President Muhammadu Buhari or worse against the north to calm down and be critical and ask themselves this genuine question: Is this the same Buhari we campaigned and voted for?

The only reasons Goodluck Jonathan was kicked out of office in 2015 was due to the high level of insecurity ravaging the nation. When he was in office, Boko Haram attacks were rife. Even his die-hard supporters admitted that it was a serious problem. Anyone with a sense of humanity would shed a tear or two over the kidnap of the more than 200 students from Chibok. Patience Jonathan could not hold back her tears when she met with First ladies from different states.

Buhari was brought in to solve this problem as quickly as possible as a former head of state. Governing the nation was not expected to be a problem. His military background also raised the hope of Nigerians in his possible ability to deal with insecurity.

Shockingly however, it seems the president has no clue on how to deal with the multi-dimensional insecurity problem. It has become a daily occurrence in the news to read about someone being kidnapped for ransom or killed by bandits or Boko Haram or herdsmen. Members of the Eastern Security Network continue to attacks police stations in the south east.

This is not the Buhari many expected would be very firm and decisive when it comes to the issue of insecurity. Instead, we keep hearing about his threats to deal with criminals but it’s looking more and more like empty threats all the time. If Buhari had not won the presidential election, many of us would be fantasizing about how the best man for the job was not given a chance. This Buhari in power has performed below expectations.
