General Murtala Mohammed was a Nigerian military Head of State and Government from July, 1966 to February, 1967. Reports had it that, Murtala Mohammed and Theophilus Danjuma led the second coup in Nigeria against the government of General Aguiyi Ironsi on 29 July,1966. Though, Danjuma led the troops that surrounded Government House Ibadan, where Ironsi has gone to pay a visit to the then Western Regional Premier, Adekunle Fajuyi.

General Ironsi and Fajuyi were assassinated and their lifeless bodies were later discovered in a bush.

General Murtala Mohammed was born in November,1938 in Kano State, North Western part of Nigeria. Mohammed started his elementary education at Cikin Gida Elementary School and later transferred to Gidan Makama Primary School in Kano. After his elementary education, he attended Kano Middle School (now Rumfa College) and later went to Government College Zaria(now Barewa College). After graduation in 1957, he was conscripted into the Nigerian military in 1958.

He went for military training in Ghana and at Sandhurst Royal Military Academy in England. After his training, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1961. He served in many capacities in Nigerian army, before plotting a coup in July, 1966 alongside other Nigerian soldiers of mostly Northern extraction.

After the coup that toppled the government of General Ironsi, General Yakubu Gowon became the military Head of State and Government.

General Johnson Thomas Umunnakwe Aguiyi Ironsi was the Head of State and Government from 16 January, 1966 till his assassination on 29 July, 1966. Reliable reports had it that, late General Murtala Mohammed and Theophilus Danjuma led the coup that toppled the government of Ironsi and assassinated him including his host, Adekunle Fajuyi, the then Premier of Western region who he a visit.
