Governor Elrufai was born on 16th February, 1960 in Daudawa, Katsina State to a Fulani family. He lost his father at the age of 8 and was raised by his single mother in Zaria until his uncle in Kaduna decided to sponsor him through school.

For his Education, Malam Elrufai attended Barawa college Zaria, the prestigious ABU Zaria where he bagged a first class degree in Quantity survey. He is also an alumni of Harvard University, Georgetown University and the University of London.
He ventured into politics two decades ago and was former minister of FCT during Obasanjo's regime. In 2011, he defeated Alhaji Ramalan Yero to become the executive Governor of Kaduna State. He retained his seat in 2015, making his deputy the first female to occupy that position in the State.
He has three wives - Hadiza, Ummi and Aisha Elrufai. These union is blessed with many children.

There is a school of thought that Gov Elrufai is a religious fanatic fueling the killing in Kaduna state. This notion is actually false as the Governor is working tirelessly to end insecurity in the State.
