In November of 2006, DameVirginia Ngozi Etiaba CON, made history when she became the first and only woman in Nigeria to occupy the position of a governor of a state before and after independence. But her stay in office did not last long as Peter Obi victory in court made Etiaba to leave office in February of 2007.
Before Dame Etiaba made history in becoming the first female Governor in Nigeria, she was the deputy governor of Peter Obi. She became the Governor after Peter Obi was impeached for alleged gross misconduct by the state House of Assembly. Three months into her reign as a Governor, Peter Obi won his case in the Enugu State court of Appeal after he challenged his impeachment. Obi was reinstated which made Etiaba to hand power back to him.
Even though her stay in office lasted a short period of time, it was indeed a great achievement that till date no woman in Nigeria have match. Etiaba is a native of Ezekwuabor Otolo-Nnewi in Nnewi North Local Council of Anambra State.
