Why Southern PDP May Have Played Into The Hands of The North, As North May Win Presidential Ticket

There are strong indications that the decision to zone the Peoples Democratic Party chairman's slot to the North may backfire on the Southern PDP caucus.

Though the Southern PDP caucus saw the zoning arrangement as a political triumph that may eventually pave the way for the emergence of a Southern President in 2023, recent reports point to the contrary.

According to a report in Vanguard, the South PDP caucus may have willingly walked into a political trap set by the Northern power brokers, which may see it (Southern PDP) come out as losers at the end day.

Why is this so? That will be the focus of this article.

The North might win both the chairman office and presidential ticket

According to the Vanguard report, the North did not put up a strong resistance to the South's demand to Zone the Chairman's office to the South because it has a game plan.

The game plan is to ensure that the northern candidate that emerges as the party chairman is a core Northerner who is passionately committed to the emergence of a Northern President.

Another part of the plan is to ensure that PDP leaders are forced to throw the Presidential ticket contest open to all the regions so that the Northern candidates can be part of it.

The third leg of the plan will be executed during the PDP primaries. The new party chairman will be mobilized by Northern power brokers to work to favour the emergence of a Northern candidate.

That means at the end of the process, the North will end up with both the office of the chairman as well as fly the party's flag at the presidential election. The Northern power bloc is already mobilising towards the success of their plan as they are already lining up possible candidates to contest for the party's top office.

Some of the names that have been mentioned include former Minister, Alhaji Sule Lamido, former Governor of Kwara State Shaaba Lafiagi and the last name on the list is Ahmed Markafi, also a former Governor.

If this plan succeeds, it will come as a rude shock to the Southern PDP caucus. It will also reinforce the notion that the North are masters in the game of politics.
