According to The PUNCH, three traditional rulers were gruesomely murdered by unknown gunmen in Imo State on Tuesday, October 19, 2021.
The traditional rulers were having a stakeholders’ meeting at the Njaba local council headquarters at Nnenasa when the gunmen stormed the location.
Three traditional rulers died in the process while several others were gravely injured. The environment is still in a state of panic as at the time of this report.
According to the Imo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Mike Abattam, two of the traditional rulers have been confirmed dead and investigation has commenced immediately.
The attack came barely 24 hours after a police station was set ablaze in Ebonyi State, leading to the death of an officer.
The insecurity in the south-east is worrisome and alarming. We must put an end to the madness as soon as possible.
The fight against insecurity is a collective responsibility and we must all take part in it.
There is a need for collective security in the South-east region. Collective security means working together for the purpose of peace and stability.
The launching of Exercise Golden Dawn by the Nigerian Army and the establishment of Ebube Agu security network by the South East Governors are commendable.
The civilians in the region must partake in collective security by doing the following things.
1. The people must take part in the fight against insecurity in the region by providing security agencies with credible information that will lead to the success of their operations.
2. The unknown gunmen terrorising the region are not ghosts, they are humans like us. They eat and have houses where they live.
The people should stop giving the gunmen adequate support. They can't survive without the support of the people.
Civilians should stop encouraging them by cheering them when they attack security agents.
The gunmen are not freedom fighters, they are terrorists and they are coming for the masses soon.
