Governor Akeredolu Apoints Son As Head Of Agency: Can Buhari Appoint Yusuf As COS Under The Law?

According to a report by Daily Trust, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo State has appointed his son, Babajide, as the Director-General of the Performance and Project Implementation Monitoring Unit (PPIMU). The appointment of the governor’s son was announced alongside that of 14 commissioners. Last year, Akeredolu had boasted that he could appoint his son as Chief of Staff and nothing would stop it.

This appointment has generated controversies among Nigerians that are asking if the appointment is within the context of the law? They want to know if it is constitutional or not. The truth is that it is constitutional, not unconstitutional. Nigeria law does not regard this as nepotism or avarice. Anybody that has the required qualifications for a post can be appointed to any position anywhere in Nigeria.

Recruitment involves a sequence of activities considered in selecting, retaining, and starting new employees. It consists of the adoption of relevant aptitudes, abilities, and motivation, which are capable of developing the high performance of the workforce. The Nigerian Civil Service rule for temporary appointments holds certain qualifications for eligibility into the service which are as follows;

1. He/she must not be less than fifteen years and not more than fifty years of age.

2. He/she must be a Nigerian citizen and must possess the required minimum qualifications.

3. He/she should be certified as sound in good health and medically fit for the required services in the Civil Service.

4. He/she must obtain a temporary testimonial of good conduct from his last employer or last school and college attended.

These are the rules in which non of it has been violated by the son of Governor Akeredolu. This also implies that President Buhari can as well appoint his son Yusuf as the Chief of Staff (COS) if he wishes once all qualifications are met. If a result could be achieved, there is no cause for alarm. In as much as he is capable and qualified to do the job, nothing is wrong with that. Let the governor appoint any or many as his children and relatives. We just need a positive result. The people of Ondo state have trusted him with that position (governor).
