The South East has been disadvantaged and neglected in recent years, and residents believe that they are being purposely excluded from political higher posts. As a result, when Mr. Peter Obi ran for President in the recent election, the Labour Party candidate received a considerable number of votes. Dave Umahi, the Governor of Ebonyi State and the Senator-elect of Ebonyi South, has declared that the South East intends to govern Nigeria.
He did, however, emphasize that no one will be forced to grant the area the presidency. According to him, the South East lacks the population density to compete with other regions in the country. He declared unequivocally that the people must be realistic and support the right path that will lead to their election as President of the Republic.
''A lot of our people say things they can't implement, and those who don't wish us well take these words to heart,'' he said. But we are really peaceful people, and we are creators. And because we are everywhere, we must isolate the character that only a handful of us are generating. We are not opposed to the country's leadership. Yes, the South East wants to dominate Nigeria, but we won't get it if we use force. A party is similar to a club, and a party has a goal, so if we are getting the short end of the stick, it is because we have yet to impress the party. And if we didn't impress the party, it is difficult for us to be where decisions are made.''
