How PDP Governors May Be Divided As they Meet on Zoning Issues

The crisis rocking the leadership of the main opposition party in Nigeria, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), may soon affect the relationship between states governors who were elected under the platform of the party.

It could be recalled that some members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who are loyal to Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike have, recently, agitated for the resignation or, outright, removal of the erstwhile national chairman of the party, Prince Uche Secondus.

The agitation for the removal of Prince Uche Secondus as the national chairman of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party had resulted into political turmoil which is, drastically, forsaking the political viability of the party.

In an attempt to resolve the political crisis bedeviling the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), some prominent leaders and members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party decided to conduct the National Convention of the party.

The National Convention, which was slated for Friday 30, October and Saturday, 31 October, 2021, has been surrounded with political disagreement about the zoning formula that should be adopted for the Convention.

To resolve the zoning problem, the opposition party set up a Zoning Committee under the leadership of Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. The assignment of the committee was come up with a robust zoning formula that the party may adopt, in the forthcoming convention, which will not result into another crisis within the party.

However, indications from the meeting of the zoning committee show that the states governors elected under the platform of PDP may, definitely, be divided, in the course of determining the zoning formula that would be adopted by PDP at the National Convention.

It could be recalled that it was earlier reported that Governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, was said to have led a political group under the aegis of "Maintain the Status Quo Group". This group is calling on the zoning committee of the opposition party to adopt the 2017 zoning where the national chairman of the party emerged from the South while presidential ticket of the party was zoned to the North.

Also, another political group, Move Around Group, being led by former President of the Senate, Anyim Pius Anyim, is insisting on power rotation. This group insists that the presidential ticket of the party must be zoned to the South while national chairmanship position is zoned to the North.

Interestingly, it could be recalled that Southern Governors' Forum (SGF) have, earlier, demanded for the zoning of presidential ticket of all political parties to the Southern part of the country. Southern Governors' Forum insists that zoning of 2023 presidential ticket to the South will maintain fairness, equity and unity of the country.

Considering the new development from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde may align with some northern governors which may, possibly, bring division within the PDP Governors' Forum when the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party meet on Wednesday to discuss the Zoning issues.

Possibly, some Southern governors who were elected under the platform of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may, also, decide to maintain the stance of their colleagues in the Southern Governors' Forum by demanding for the zoning of presidential ticket of PDP to the South.
