It all looks like Mr. Rauf Aregbesola doesn't have much power in the Osun State political arena anymore. A faction, which is loyal to him, conducted a parallel congress on Saturday in Osogbo. He may not have to struggle much before he gets power. He can actually gain more influence in the party.
There have been some issues since Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, the Osun State governor, took over from Aregbesola. The crisis reached the peak when The Osun Progresives was formed and linked to the interior minister.
And the division within the political party clearly manifested itself in the last Saturday congress. The Osun Progresives held a parallel congress and the national leadership of the APC has hinted that the party would use sanctions on the people who conducted or led the parallel congresses.
This issue may adversely affect the former governor of Osun State. But if he wants to get influence in the party, he may have to leave the state chapter and work on the national level. The tenure of the caretaker committee chairman may not last because the party would conduct a national convention.
If Rauf Aregbesola can't operate at the Osun State chapter of the APC, the national level is the most viable option for him. And he can get more attention if he can work for a particular aspirant for the chairman's seat. The APC is currently under Mr. Mai Mala Buni, the Yobe State governor. But surely the party would elect a national chairman.
Mr. Ali Modu Sheriff has shown his interest in the vacancy. And at the same time, Mr. Tanko Al-Makura is being projected as a possible candidate for the job at the APC secretariat. Aregbesola can use his discretion and identify one of the possible contenders for the job. He should then throw his weight behind the politician. With that, Aregbesola can gain more influence.
Once he is done identifying a potential APC chairman, he should link up with at least one top northern politician whom he can contest with. The APC ticket would soon be open for competition. And Mr. Aregbesola can work with some northern personalities.
If Aregbesola comes out to contest for the APC ticket, he would shake some party leaders including Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Although Aregbesola may not win the ticket, he can still get influence by merely showing his interest in it. And this may make Tinubu and others to negotiate with Aregbesola. Hence, the former governor would get influence in the APC.
