Opinion: Why PDP May Not Zone its Presidential Ticket to the South in 2023

The 2023 presidential election is fast approaching and politicians have started revealing their ambitions ahead of the election.

Many political parties haven't decided on where their presidential tickets will be zoned in 2023. However, different ethnic nationalities have been advocating for the presidential seat in 2023.

The Southern Governors Forum has agreed that the next president should emerge from the South after President Muhammadu Buhari's tenure in 2023.

Similarly, the apex Igbo group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has also demanded that all political parties zone their tickets to the South East to enable an Igbo man to emerge as President in 2023.

Some Northern politicians, on the other hand, have kicked against the demands of the Southern Governors Forum and Ohanaeze Ndigbo. They argue that nothing will happen if another northern succeeds President Buhari in 2023 since the constitution doesn't support a rotational presidency and zoning arrangement.

Based on reality, the All Progressive Congress might comply with the position of southern governors and Ohanaeze Ndigbo and zone its presidential ticket to the South in 2023.

However, it is uncertain whether the Peoples Democratic Party will zone its ticket to the south in 2023.

This is because the party's national chairman might come from the South. The party's national convention will hold in October and major contenders for the chairmanship position are southerners.

If a southerner finally emerges as the National Chairman, the presidential ticket might be zoned to the North. The party always rotates the positions of national chairman and presidential candidate between the north and the south.
