Akwa Ibom State has been blessed with Exceptional leaders in time past who has brought tremendous change to its state. Even though a majority of them are no longer in office but the positive changes they made are still remembered. Below are photos of governors who ruled Akwa Ibom from 1990 till date.
Otuekong Idongesit Nkanga was a retired Air Commodore who also served as an administrator of Akwa Ibom from September 1990 to January 1992. This was under the Military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida. He died in December 2020 from Covid-19 complications at the age of 68.
Obong Akpan Isemin became governor of Akwa Ibom State in January 1992 under the national republican convention political party. This was after he took over from Idongesit Nkanga. He held this position until November 1993.
Colonel (retired) Yakubu Bako was appointed as an administrator of Akwa Ibom State from December 1993 to August 1996 under the leadership of General Sani Abacha. He was appointed under the All Progressive Congress(APC) political party.
Captain Joseph Adeduro Adeusi became an administrator of Akwa Ibom State in August 1996. Although currently retired, he held this position as administrator of Akwa Ibom State until August 1998 during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.
Retired Captain Eyepeiyah John Ebiye was appointed as administrator of Akwa Ibom State under General Abdulsalami Abubakar's regime from August 1998 to May 1999. He handed over to a democratically elected governor Victor Attah at the end of his tenure.
Obong Victor Bassey Attah (born 20 November 1938) was elected as Governor of Akwa Ibom State in 1999 after which he was sworn in on the 29th of May 1999. He was elected under the People's Democratic Party (PDP), although he later defected to All Progressives Congress. He left office in May 2007.
Godswill Obot Akpabio has served in different capacities in the political threshold. He was democratically elected as governor of Akwa Ibom State in May 2007 till 2011 after which he was re-elected for a second term of office. After another four years as governor which ended in 2015, he was appointed as a senator and thereafter Minister of Niger Delta. This is a position he occupies presently.
Udom Gabriel Emmanuel is the current governor of Akwa Ibom State. He became governor in May 2015 after contesting for the same position under the People's Democratic Party. He is currently on his second term of office after he was re-elected as governor of Akwa Ibom State in May 2019.
