The Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) continues to hold sway in the southeast, championing the course of secession for the Igbos. However, the number of adherents must worry Igbo leaders, it is evident in their believe that they do not seek presidency of the country but a total secession from the country. Their acclaimed leader Nnamdi Kanu has made various utterances to such effect. With the other Igbo groups preparing for the 2023 presidency, how will this internal division and dichotomy of purpose affect their ambition, vis-à-vis the competition from the southwest and south - south?
The southwest has had their own freedom groups, however unlike the southeast, their interests seems to be unified with the political aspirations of the region. IPOB on the other hand, is in total disagreement with any of the region's political interest in Nigeria. This makes it clear, that the very existence of the group, threatens the chance of the Igbos producing a president in 2023.
Although it is left to be seen how the group adherents will react towards 2023, IPOB poses a great threat to Igbo presidency. See the major areas below;
IPOB BOASTS OF A CONSIDERABLE NUMBER OF FAITHFULS
How will the Igbos strategize towards 2023 presidency when a considerable number of the southeast, refuses to key into the movement? IPOB faithfuls still constitute a large part of the Igbo society, who may be bent on secession without any recourse to any other interest. Their ambition and interest at the moment, seem to run parallel to that of the Igbo leaders presidential bid. Unless there is a change of thinking, and a subsequent union of purpose, Igbo presidency may just be another hoax come 2023. However, can IPOB ever join forces with the other groups to produce a Nigerian president?
IPOB'S INTERESTS UNDERMINE IGBOS ABILITY TO UNITE UNDER A COMMON PURPOSE
It has been clearly shown in the past that, a unification of purpose and interest greatly affect any region's ability to produce a president. If the Igbos cannot unite in their region, who will they unite with? In order to pose serious challenge in 2023, all hands must be on deck for the southeast and anything short of this constitutes, a setback to their ambition come 2023.
IPOB AFFECT IGBOS EXTERNAL POLITICAL TRUST
IPOB's declarations and interests, are in total conflict with the nation's goal of creating a united Nigeria. Hence their continuous existence, readily downgrade the southeast political trust especially from other regions. The questions of trust continue to come up because of the interest and activities of IPOB, and unless there is a considerable change before 2023, the Igbo's chance of wining the presidential election or producing a candidate, may have been undermined.
