President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday downplayed the possibility of the Federal Government granting amnesty to criminals and bandits.
Recall that weeks ago, renowned Islamic scholar, Ahmed Muhammad Gumi urged the federal and state governments to grant amnesty to repentant bandits, saying that there will be serious bloodshed and merciless killings if the government and security agencies continue to engage the bandits on operation fire-for-fire.
Gumi, while addressing newsmen at the chamber of the Government House in Gusau, explained that the late President Musa Yar’Adua granted amnesty to militants in the South-South zone and went extra mile to create the ministry of Niger Delta Affairs.
Reacting to this, President Buhari warned that his government would deal decisively with all forms of criminality in the country.
He spoke while declaring open a joint security meeting of the Northern State Governors’ Forum, Northern Traditional Rulers Council and delegation from the Federal Government.
Represented by his Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, Buhari said he has directed the security chief to evolve strategy on how to deal with all forms of criminalities.
