The Federal Government Does Not Place Sheikh Gumi Above The Law

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi is a very respected and renowned Islamic Cleric. And as a devoted Muslim who has the interest of Nigeria at heart, he expresses concern for the spate of insecurity in the country, especially in the northwest where he lives in. It was in the light of this that he deemed it worthwhile to take the risk of approaching the bandits who were responsible for the kidnapping and killing of the innocent ones in that region. And his mission to the dens of the dreaded criminals had been to broker peace deal between them and the government. To achieve this, he convinced the government to grant them amnesty, as well as empower them economically, and that with such in place, they would desist from banditry. But unfortunately the hoodlums proved him wrong by accepting the state pardon and the other benefits that accompanied the peace accord only to return to their criminal ways.

With the disappointing act of the bandits, the Minister of Allah found himself at the receiving end of all manners of harsh criticisms from the general public. But, perhaps, because of his being a man of God, he remains steadfast in his defence of them. Unlike others, he does not see them as criminals. Rather, he holds the view that they are victims of circumstances who need to be listened to, forgiven and reformed. But unfortunately the more he advocates for public supports for them, the more he annoys the masses and even government agents.

For example, about a month ago, while criticising the President Buhari-led Federal government (FG) over the ongoing war against the urchins in Zamfara State, he and Femi Adeshina, who is an Aide to the Presidency traded a war of words with each other. And it can be recalled that while Adeshina referred to him as a Bandit lover, he had fired back by calling him a bootlicker.

Despite the humiliation that the Sheikh has been condoning, many are still of the belief that the FG has not arrested or questioned him for his unrepentant supports for the bandits because he is placed above the law. But the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Lucky Irabor, while speaking yesterday at a ministerial briefing organised by the presidential communications team at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, has cleared the air regarding what the general public sees as the FG intentionally ignoring him despite his closeness to the dreaded outlaws. According to the CDS, while Gumi does not work for the military, the military will not prevent anyone from contributing to the country’s security. Therefore, the Sheikh is only contributing his own quota to the security of the Nigeria.

Considering the above comments by the CDS, it is now clear that the fact that Sheikh Gumi is not on the offensive side of the government, is not because he is considered to be above the law, but for the fact that he has not done anything unlawful.
