While Nigerians are anxious to know the moves of the federal government and political parties regarding the zoning of the presidency, we shall be looking at two major indications why power might remain in the north.

Northern Governors Forum's Reaction To Southern Governors

Recall that the Southern Governors forum had some time back called for power shift to the South. This statement by the Southern governors was strongly opposed by the Northern governors.

The Northern governors made it clear that the call for zoning by the Southern governors is unconstitutional. They stated that the law only grants any candidate with the highest votes the winner of any election.

To this effect, the north are free to present a candidate and contest in the forthcoming elections without any restrictions.

This provision will grant the north the opportunity to contest in the 2023 general elections, raising the chances of the north retaining power.

PDP's Open Ticket For All Zones In The Country

After the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) National Executive Council Meeting (NEC) some time back, made it clear that the party's presidential ticket is open for all interested candidates from every part of the country.

This implies that PDP is not zoning its presidential ticket, thereby giving the north another opportunity to contest in the next election.

With the above outcomes, it is obvious that the north still has an opportunity to retain power come 2023.
