Why It Is Wrong For El-Rufai & Akeredolu To Be Exchanging Words On Open Grazing

The Governors of Ondo and Kaduna States are debating, they are exchanging words about the insecurity caused and associated with open grazing in the South. Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu of the Ondo State believed that the Open grazing ban has come to stay while Mallam Nasir El-Rufai believed the ban on open grazing in the South is not implementable.

According to a report by Punch, the reply to El-Rufai’s statement by Akeredolu alleged that El-Rufai is trying to stop the ban on open grazing by going against it. Many Nigerians have reacted to this assertion against El-Rufai and find it wrong for them to be exchanging words.

However, it is worth noting that, in many cases, Governor Akeredolu of Ondo State has proven times without number that he is a leader that does not trade the security and interest of his people for personal benefit. Indeed Akerodolu has shown a true behavior of a very courageous leader of repute. Defending and standing by his responsibility as a leader. Irrespective of tribe and party, this man Akeredolu always says the hard truth. He championed the Amotekun course despite being an APC Governor.

On the other hand, El-Rufai with expert knowledge of economics was just saying his opinion, which conforms with the opinion of many other Nigerians about the ban on open grazing in Nigeria. What will be the fate of the herdsmen that are struggling hard to get their cattle feeds? There must be a plan on the ground before they are banned. Plans such as the provision of infrastructure facilities such as ranching and RUGA for the herders. Open grazing is indeed the way of the old in rearing cattle, but these cattle Herders must feed their cattle in one way or the other. There must be a provision for succor before placing a ban on any activity or means of livelihood of Nigerians.

At this junction, both the Governors should respect each other's opinions and stop exchanging words with one another. Each one of them should stick to the policy that is best for their people and will bring about development and prosperity. If the ban on open grazing will curb the incessant killing of people and the destruction of properties by the killer herdsmen in the South in the name of open grazing, then the ban on open grazing should be observed.
