The Nigerian Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari has been effective in its fight against corruption. If you ask me, I will rate this government 9/10 on its effectiveness in the recovery of lost loot in foreign countries. It is sad that some Nigerians who used to be in power made away with so much money. They decided to keep it abroad when people could make use of it here.
One of the promises Buhari made before and after becoming Nigerian president in the year 2015, was that he was going to fight corruption. Anyone who has read history well, would know that Buhari never for once, tolerated corruption in his government.
In this article, we will be looking at the 4 major Countries in the world which President Buhari successfully recovered multi-billion naira loot from in the last 5 years of his leadership.
Nigeria signed a trilateral agreement with Switzerland and the World Bank in 2017. This agreement gave Nigeria the opportunity to recover $322.515 million in loot from Switzerland. This money is worth about 132 billion naira in today's dollar to naira exchange rate.
2. United States of America.
The Federal Government of Nigeria signed a trilateral agreement with U.S.A and Bailiwick of Jersey in 2020. After the agreement, Nigeria was able to recover loot totalling the sum of $311.7 million. This is worth about 127 billion naira today.
3. Northern Ireland.
Nigeria was also able to recover loot of 5.4 million Euros from Northern Ireland in the year 2020 after an agreement was signed between the two countries. This money is worth about 2.5 billion naira in today's Euro to naira exchange rate.
4. United Kingdom.
The Federal Government recovered James Ibori's loot of 4,214,017.66 Euros from the United Kingdom in the year 2021. This money is worth over 1.8 billion naira today.
With no debate here, the Buhari-led government has truly and practically shown that it has no room for corruption in the country. The government deserves commendation for a job well done.
