The People's Democratic Party will look up to the voters in Osun and Ekiti State to help the party go back to the normal way. And one particular idea can be of great use for the party in the two states. The PDP will find solace in the two states next year.
There will be a gubernatorial election in each of Osun and Ekiti State in 2022. The PDP began to lose Osun State in 2010 (following the decision of the Court of Appeal) while APC took over Ekiti State in 2018. In whatever way, the PDP will want to take over the two states; and one method is crucial.
The idea is that the party should shun all other methods; and the PDP should settle for a very popular candidate. It should be clear right now that Nigerian politics is tilting from money affairs to popularity. That is actually what wins elections for successful parties. If the PDP settles for a candidate who is not popular, then the party should be ready to record failure in the two states as well.
A former governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Segun Oni, has shared the same opinion or view. Of course, it is the same Segun Oni, who once led Ekiti State as its governor. Now he has argued that the PDP needs to opt for popular candidate in Osun and Ekiti State. And that is exactly what the party needs.
In 2018, the PDP gave its flag to Mr. Ademola Adeleke, a former federal lawmaker. He struggled so hard to the extent that he was leading in the poll till the exercise was said to be inconclusive. But could he be regarded to be a popular candidate? Meanwhile, Mr. Segun Oni didn't mention names. But his message ought to be understood.
There would be clashes of political interests in the two states (Osun and Ekiti). Mr. Ayodele Fayose will want to have some influence and at the same time there will be external forces. The Oyo State governor, Mr. Seyi Makinde will want to spread his tentacles beyond the shores of Oyo.
But no matter what happens in the two states and southwest at large, it is important for the PDP to go for a credible and popular candidate. Individual interests shouldn't affect the choice of a good and popular candidate.
