The All Progresives Congress conducts its primary election today in Ondo State to pick a candidate for the 2020 governorship election in the state.
After much consultation and tension the party has decided to use the indirect primary election. Twelve candidates are participating in the election, but below is a list of core politicians who will determine what happens in the race.
1. Governor Yahaya Bello
He is the Chairman of the electoral committee of the APC. He was appointed by the Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Committee to conduct an election and the party will choose a candidate for the main election later this year.
Mr. Yahaya Bello has to consider a free and fair election which will be acceptable to the candidates and the party as a whole. The but on him is very heavy that whatever happens today will determine the chances of winning the main election.
2. Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu
Akeredolu is currently the Ondo State governor and he is seeking reelection on the platform of the APC.
As an incumbent governor he wouldn't want to lose the party ticket to anybody. He will have to prove to everyone that he is in charge of the APC in Ondo State. It is very rare for a sitting governor to lose a primary election. So, he will do whatever he can to win the ticket.
There are eleven more candidates who are eyeing the party ticket. And Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu will have to defeat them. It will be a great shame if he loses the election.
3. Mr. Olusegun Abraham
In 2016 Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu supported Olusegun Abraham for the ticket. Even Tinubu was very clear and unambiguous at that time that he wanted Abraham. But unfortunately, the party leadership under former national chairman John Odige-Oyegun gave the ticket to Rotimi Akeredolu.
Mr. Abraham's efforts at that time was in vain. And he is contesting again. Bola Ahmed Tinubu has not appeared to be really supporting Abraham this time around. There are, however, insinuations from different quarters that Tinubu is still backing Abraham.
Whatever happens today will not be a battle between Akeredolu and Abraham. It will be an extension of the power tussle between Tinubu and Akeredolu.
Bola Ahmed Tinubu will be a player in the election. It would have been easier for him to influence what happens today if Adams Oshiomole had not been suspended and the National Working Committee had not been dissolved and replaced with the Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Committee.
4. Olusola Oke
He is one of the serious contender for the ticket. He has been rigorously campaigning and talking to the delegates who will participate in the election.
Oke may not the backup of the party leadership, but he appears to be a great contender for the ticket.
Even from all indications, if he doesn't win the election, he will be the first runner-up and he will have something to prove to the party that he is really a strong member of the APC.
5. Mai Mala Buni
Much pressure is on the chairman of the APC caretaker committee, Mallam Buni.
The committee was set up in June following unresolved issues that shook the party to its foundation. The National Executive Council of the party in its last meeting dissolved the NWC with immediate effect and a caretaker committee was set up to see to the success of the APC in Edo and Ondo State and to conduct a national convention.
The first serious assignment for the committee is the Ondo APC Primary Election. It is very crucial because it will show whether Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker Committee is up to the task given to it by the NEC.
The Yobe State Governor Buni and his committee have to ensure a transparent and acceptable primary.
