Ondo APC primary election: A need to avoid the Zamfara scenario (Opinion)

As part of the preparation for the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo state, the Ondo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed 20th of July for its primary election in the state.

However, the party is currently going through some internal problems as regards the forthcoming primary election. It was reported that while many of the contestants for the July 20 primary election prefer direct method, the incumbent governor who is also a contestant maintains that the indirect method is the best method.

According to the governor, rather than allowing every card carrying member of the party to select a particular candidate for the October 10 gubernatorial election in the state, the party higher hierarchy should select delegates who will choose the party's candidate in the October 10 governorship election. It should be noted that despite the fact that 11 out of 12 contestants supported the direct method, the party has decided to use the indirect method as suggested by the incumbent governor Rotimi Akeredolu and some party men.

Arguably, some contestants are not happy with the choice of the indirect method, hence, there is a need for the party to avoid what happened in 2019 general election in Zamfara state.

Though there are several reports of what led to the Zamfara saga, however, one of the reports was that the Zamfara saga commenced when Senator Kabiru Marafa lost in the primary election, and a as a result of this the party was believed to be divided into two.

While some were supporting Senator Kabiru Marafa, some were supporting governor Abdul'azeez Yari. While the Yari camp maintained that they have conducted primary election for the 2019 general election in the state, the Marafa camp maintained that there was no primary election.

It is important to state that despite the fact that the APC candidate emerged victorious in the 2019 governorship election in Zamfara state, he was later sacked by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after a court ruling which claimed that the party did not conduct valid primary election in the 2019 general election.

Thus, the candidate of the PDP Bello Matawalle having came second in the gubernatorial election was declared the winner of the 2019 governorship election in Zamfara state.

Therefore, the All Progressive Congress (APC) Ondo state chapter must try as much as possible to avoid the Zamfara scenario, the party higher hierarchy must make sure that the interest of every contestant is satisfied.

Evidently, only one candidate will emerge victorious in the July 20 primary election, however, other contestants must also be carried along, the party higher hierarchy must make sure that every contestant is compensated, several committees must be created to listen to the demands of other contestants after the primary election.

God bless Nigeria.
