The ban that was placed on open grazing by some southern Governors in the country has continued to generate a lot of controversies among Nigerians most especially those from the North. In a recent interview with SaharaReporters, a former Nigerian Lawmaker representing Kaduna central Senatorial district, Senator Shehu Sani Issued his support for Southern governors over their decision to put a ban on open grazing.
While reacting, Shehu Sani noted that Fulani herdsmen in the North have wreaked havoc in the North than they have done in the South, and that the governors were not wrong in their decision to checkmate their activities by putting a ban on open grazing.Photo Credit: Vanguard
As much as we might beg to differ, senator Shehu Sani is right. One of the major reason why most of the southern governors placed a ban on open grazing was as a result of the farmers-herder crisis that almost engulfed the region. Most of the herders were accused of destroying farmlands, as well as the killing of innocent farmers in their farmlands. And since the ban on open grazing was effected in most of the southern states, farmers-herders crisis have reduced drastically.
It is high time every herder embraces ranching. State governments should also ensure they do all they can to make sure herders are given enough lands for ranching.
This will bring an end to all the issues facing us and everyone will be happy.
