The All Progressive Congress is set to conduct its national convention with the completion of the revalidation and registration of new members into the party.
The caretaker committee led by Governor MaiMala Buni of Yobe State will have to hand over to newly elected national executives that will take over the leadership of the party.
Among the position of leadership that will be occupied, the post of national chairman of the party has attracted several candidates with many wooing the power brokers to gain the necessary support needed to emerge as the new chairman of the party.
Among the geopolitical zones in the country, the North-Central should be considered as the next zone to produce the Chairman of the All Progressive Congress.
The candidates from the North-Central zone should be favored among the rest to occupy the post due to the following reasons.
1. The North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria is made up of seven States, Niger, Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara, and FCT. The All Progressive Congress controls the majority of the state in this zone, with a huge number of votes garnered from this zone by APC in previous elections conducted. The zone remains one of the strongholds of APC in the country. A principal position may need to be given to this zone to ensure that APC remains the majority political party in the North-Central geopolitical zone.
2. A thorough analysis of how APC has handed important positions to the geopolitical zone in the north will reveal how the North-Central has been left out for some years. The North-West geopolitical zone has the slot of the presidency, the North-East has the Senate president while the North-Central zone is still waiting to occupy a principal position under the All Progressive Congress. If a candidate from the North-Central is made the national chairman of the party, it will help to promote fairness and equity.
3. The political permutation of 2023: The possibility of the seat of presidency being zone to the southern part of Nigeria cannot be ruled out as zoning has been an informal way of rotating powers between the northern and the southern part of the country since the commencement of the 4th republic.
If the seat of the presidency should be zoned to the South, the position of national chairman of the party will go to the North. A candidate from the North-Central will make a good choice because of the voting strength of the zone and the seat of the vice-president will be left for North-East and North-West.
Only time can tell if the national chairman of All Progressive Congress (APC) will be zoned to the North-Central geopolitical zone.
Dear Reader, which geopolitical zone do you think should produce the next national chairman of APC? Drop your comments!
