The rumoured Presidential ambition of River State Governor, Nyesom Wike may have received a major boost following a recent report that the Peoples Democratic Party may have decided to throw the contest for its presidential ticket open.
The twist in the zoning formula of the PDP was reported by Vanguard Newspaper citing top sources in the PDP camp. The source who spoke with the paper noted that regardless of the region that produces the PDP National Chairman, the presidential contest will be thrown open.
This is a major U-Turn for the opposition party which had earlier hinted that it will zone its presidential ticket to the North in a bid to reap millions of northern voters who may not want to vote a Southern candidate.

This new twist will be well received in the River State Government house. This report will analyse how the latest development can benefit Governor Wike’s presidential ambition.
Wike Will now be eligible to contest for PDP’s Presidential ticket as one of the favourites
Until now, Wike was not eligible to partake in the race for the PDP 2023 presidential ticket based on the initial zoning arrangement. But with the decision to throw the contest open analysts believe that Wike could emerge as one of the favourites to win the ticket and fly the PDP flag in the presidential election. He is considered to be one of the most powerful and influential governors in PDP. Besides as the Governor of a major oil-producing state, he has access to huge funds, such that financing his campaign will not be a problem.

More so, he is expected to get the backing of the South-South caucus in the PDP and this could help to make him a formidable candidate against other heavyweights in the party.
However, his major challenge maybe how to get support from the North. Some of his recent remarks and actions have not been well received in parts of the north. In certain quarters, he is viewed as anti-North because of his frequent attacks on President Buhari and controversial stance on VAT.
Wike never supported zoning from the beginning
Vanguard report has it that Wike was the sole PDP Governor that resisted the plan to zone the PDP chairmanship position to the South. He campaigned for an open contest and even directly reached out to the Governor Ifeanyi Uguanyi zoning committee and other PDP governors to jettison the idea of ceding the PDP Chairman’s office to the South.

He was well aware that zoning the office to the South could mean ceding the Presidency to the North, which will shut the door on his ambition.
His lobby efforts may have influenced the decision to dismiss zoning.
