EDO 2020: The Stage for Political Combat Is Almost Ready, As Oshiomole Return to Benin (Opinion)

As the Edo State forthcoming governorship election is approaching, many have been making predictions on how the gubernatorial race will be. Because Edo politics has attracted many Nigerians attention, because it involves many personalities, such as energetic former labour leader Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, we shall be looking at it.

The political combat in Edo State as to who governs the state for the next four years is on. The forthcoming governorship election in the state scheduled to take place in September 19th, is just eight weeks away from today, and all the political parties involved are all crossing their fingers on how to hatch a plan that would led them to emerge victorious.

Over twelve candidate of other political names was announced in the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC final list for Edo State, But there are only two political parties in the state to watch as far as this gubernatorial race is concerned. The People's Democratic Party PDP, and the ruling All Progressive Congress APC.

However, Interestingly both the duo of APC and PDP have candidates who challenged themselves in 2016. Godwin Obaseki who is now the candidate of the PDP was the candidate of the APC.

On PDP's part, it's governorship candidate, also the incumbent Governor of the state, Mr. Godwin Obasaki, has spent almost four years governing the state.

Moreover, an accountable political system is one where both the government and the elected politicians are held responsible to their constituents to the highest degree possible.

For some of us, watchers of the Edo State politics understand that APC want to take over the state back, since Gov. Obaseki has defected to PDP from APC few weeks ago.

At this point, I want to calls on the good people of Edo State to vote out a political leader that has failed to deliver from power. It is expedient to note in this context that a well-designed electoral system facilitate both of these objectives. Accountability involves far more than the mere holding election, which is largely dependent on the size and territorial nature of constituencies as well as the freedom of choice for voters to choose between candidates as opposed to parties.

Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu who is now the candidate of the APC was the candidate of the PDP then in 2016. Both parties have set their campaign councils. The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike is the head of PDP campaign council. While Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje is the head of the APC campaign. Both parties are of the mandate to deliver the state to their respective political parties comes September 19th 2020.

Meanwhile, the ousted national chairman of APC and embattled godfather of Edo politics, Adams Oshiomhole, on today 19th July, came out of his brief political holidays, declaring his mission to unseat Gov. Obaseki and enthrone Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu as his successor in the forthcoming governorship election in the state.

Also while addressing party faithful and supporters at a welcome home rally at Iyamho in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state, the energetic former labour leader said; in their absence, the party remain stronger and better and ready for the September 19th governorship election.
