Crisis Resumes In Rivers State APC After Supreme Court Verdict

Source: Punch Newspaper

The crisis rocking the Rivers State chapter of the All Progresives Congress seems not to abate as the party is still being disturbed with internal wranglings possible of causing further loss to the party that is struggling.

With the numerous crises in the state chapter of the APC, the People's Democratic Party is taking advantage of the situation by winning almost all the elections with ease and leaving crisis-ridden APC from winning something.

Mr. Nyesom Wike was virtually not challenged in the two elections he won. Even the APC was unable to participate in the last governorship election held in 2019 in the state. Wike might not have had it that easy if the APC had not had several problems.

The apex court, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, has laid to rest the leadership crisis when it declared that the faction loyal to former governor Rotimi Amaechi is the authentic APC leadership in Rivers State to the chagrin of the other faction obviously led by Magnus Abe.

But barely two months after the Court's decision, another crisis has reared its head. And this one is capable of further polarising the Rivers State chapter of the All Progresives Congress.

Mr. Rotimi Amaechi has said that the riverine area of the state would produce the next governor. He talked perhaps having confidence that his faction would determine which part of the state would get the APC ticket.

But Mr. Magnus Abe, a former member of the House of Senate, has rebuffed what Mr. Amaechi said. He said, “If you just stand and carry a microphone and begin to zone and unzone, everybody knows what you are doing. And so long as it is singularly done, I want to stand here and say that it will not work.”

Magnus Abe has really disagreed with Amaechi, who is a minister under President Muhammadu Buhari.

Senator Magnus Abe argued that the APC revalidation and membership registration exercise was yet to be concluded, and that somebody (actually referring to Amaechi) is assuring a zone of the governorship ticket.

The vibrant opponent of Amaechi said that the state chapter has yet to elect ward chairmen, ex officio, local government areas chairmen and the state chapter chairman. He therefore concluded that it was insensible to take political action of zoning the APC ticket.

Abe said, “How can anybody get up in a party where we are to do registration, we have not even concluded the registration, we have not chosen one Ward Chairman, Ward ex-officio, Local Government Area Chairman or State Party Chairman and even before any of these, somebody had come out to zone the governorship ticket of the party, is that sensible political action?

Mr. Magnus Abe further warned that the action of Amaechi could plunge the APC into further crisis and another round of failure.

He warned, “Will that aid the APC to win elections in the state? It is an action doomed to lead to another round of failure, we as party men and women should not allow it."
