Ahead of the 2023 Gubernatorial Election in Cross-River State, Top Politicians from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have started making moves to take over the mantle of leadership from the incumbent Governor Ben Ayade whose tenure 'll elapse on May 29, 2023. Listed Below are the Six Illustrious Sons of Cross-River State that may Succeed Governor Ayade.
1. Prince Daniel Asuquo (PDP)
Popularly known as DANSUKI, Asuquo, 58 is a vibrant Politician who has enjoyed maximum political goodwill from his indigenous Biase/Akampa Federal Constituency. He began his political career as Chairman of Akampa Local Government Area, a position he held from 1999 to 2002. Asuquo later served as Director, Cross-River State Electrification Agency between 2008 and 2011. During the April 2011General Elections, Asuquo was elected to represent Akampa/Biase Federal Constituency under the PDP platform. The Third-term Lawmaker won re-elections in 2015 and 2019.
2. Senator Bassey Edet Otu (APC)
Otu, 61 is popularly known as "Sweet Prince", He was elected as Member of the House of Representatives in April 2003 to represent Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency and re-elected in April 2007. In 2011, Otu was elected as Senator representing Cross-River South Senatorial District. However, he lost his re-election bid in 2015 after he was defeated by Senator Gershom Bassey at the PDP Primaries. Otu joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2016 and was appointed into the Board of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018.
3. Senator Gershom Bassey (PDP)
Bassey, 58 is a Civil Engineer turned Politician. He started his Political Career when he was appointed as Chairman of the Cross-River State Water Board in 1999, he held that position until 2014. Bassey also served as Chairman of the Strategic Policy Committee in Cross-River State. In 2015, He contested and won the Cross-River South Senatorial Seat under the platform of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and was later appointed as the Vice-chairman, Senate Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream). He was re-elected during the February 2019 General Elections.
4. Hon. Essien Ayi (PDP)
Ayi, 64 is well-known as "Funky", He began his Career as a Team Manager with Rovers Football and rose steadily to become the Chairman of the Cross-River State Sports Commission. He served as Chairman of Calabar South Local Government Area from 1995 to 2002. In April 2003, He was elected under the platform of the PDP to represent Akpabuyo/Bakassi/Calabar South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. He served in the House until 2007 and returned in 2011. Ayi, who is currently a Fourth-term Lawmaker won re-elections during the 2015 and 2019 General Elections.
5. Hon. Ntufam Ekpo Okon (APC)
Ntufam was the 2019 APC Deputy Governorship Candidate. He represented Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003. Shortly after, He was made a Commissioner by Former Governor, Donald Duke and at the same time, he served as Cross-River State PDP Chairman because of his political sagacity. Ntufam later became the Cross-River State Representative in the Niger-Delta Development Commission (NDDC). He joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) after losing the Cross-River South PDP Senatorial Ticket to the incumbent Senator Gershom Bassey.
6. Architect Bassey Eyo Ndem (PDP)
Ndem, an Architect of repute is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Micro-Mega Architectural Firm that designed and developed places like the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Headquarters in Abuja. He hails from Akpabuyo Local Government Area of Cross-River State. Ndem remains one of the brains behind the glory of Donald Duke Administration in Cross-River State, where he served as Commissioner for Lands and Housing.
