Why Amosun, Aregbesola, Lai, Others May Lose Out on Parallel Congresses

The decision by some aggrieved members of the ruling party in Nigeria, All Progressives Congress (APC), to conduct parallel congresses when the party was holding her State Congress to elect new set of state executives could be, easily, described as efforts in futility.

Notably, on Saturday, October 16, 2021 state delegates of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) trooped out, across the 36 states of the Federation, to elect new set of their state party executives. However, some leaders of the party who are having, unresolved, political rifts with their state governors have decided to conduct parallel congresses where they elected their parallel state executives of the party.

The conduct of parallel congress occurred in some states of the Federal Republic of Nigeria which include Osun, Ogun, Kwara, Niger, Kano and many other states.

Notably, the faction of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State which is loyal to former governor of the state and, current, Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Abdulrauf Adesoji Aregbesola, conducted their parallel congress which have resulted into the emergence of two party chairmen for the party in the state.

The same scenario happened to the faction of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) which is loyal to Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed. The loyalists of Alhaji Lai Muhammed, completely, stayed away from the state congress that was attended by Governor Abdulrazak Abdulrahmon in Ilorin.

Currently, two chairmen may probably be laying claims to the Office of the Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State.

In Ogun State, loyalists of Senator Ibikunle Amosun also gathered at Ake Palace Ground to conduct parallel congress that produced another set of state party executives apart from the one attended by Governor Dapo Abiodun of the state.

Interestingly, the parallel congresses that were conducted by loyalists of Senator Ibikunle Amosun in Ogun; Alhaji Lai Muhammed in Kwara; Ogbeni Abdulrauf Adesoji Aregbesola in Osun and any other parallel congress that was not attended by the National Congress Committee of the party may be considered as an exercise in futility.

The National Body of the party may not want to recognise the state executives that are, certainly, produced by parallel congresses that are not monitored by the National Congress Committee of the ruling party.
