As the people of Kogi State prepare for the governorship election, some political players in the Confluence State have been tipped to contest the election and take over from Governor Yahaya Bello in 2023.

However, available indicators have shown that the former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye, may likely defeat the State Deputy Governor, Edward Onoja to emerge the next Governor of Kogi State because of two important reasons.

Agitation For Zoning

One of the things that may likely work for Dino Melaye in the 2023 Kogi State governorship election is the ongoing agitation for zoning of the governorship position of the state to Kogi West Senatorial District where he hails from.

Recall that since the creation of the State in 1991, no politician from Kogi West has been elected to rule the State.

The three former Governors of the State; late Prince Abubakar Audu, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, and Captain Idris Wada were all Igala from Kogi East Senatorial District where the current Deputy Governor, Edward Onoja hails from.

Governor Yahaya Bello who hails from Kogi Central Senatorial District is the only politician from another zone to have ruled the State.

There is an ongoing agitation for the zoning of the Kogi governorship position to Kogi West Senatorial District for the people of the zone to produce the State Governor for the first time since the creation of the State 30 years ago.

The agitation for zoning may likely favour Dino Melaye and help him to defeat Edward Onoja in the 2023 governorship election.

Dino Melaye And PDP Will Fight Back To Win Kogi State

The former Kogi West Senator, Dino Melaye and the Peoples Democratic Party will fight back to win Kogi State after PDP lost control of the State in 2015.

Recall that Kogi State was under the control of PDP before the 2015 governorship election. The former Governor of the State, Captain Idris Wada of PDP lost his reelection bid in 2015 which paved way for Yahaya Bello of APC.

Dino Melaye remains an influential politician from Kogi West to fly the flag of PDP in the 2023 Kogi governorship election because of his political antecedent.

Recall that Dino had earlier served as a House of Representatives member before he became a Senator. He has been able to win the love of his people through his contributions to the State at the floor of the Senate when he was in the hallowed chamber.

This may work for him to fight back in 2023 and emerge as the first politician from Kogi West to be elected as Kogi State Governor.
