2 Major Reasons Why a Northern Aspirant May Emerge as PDP's Presidential Candidate for 2023 Election

The Peoples Democratic Party has crossed a major hurdle following the emergence of Dr Iyiorcha Ayu as a consensus candidate for the Northern PDP. The former Senate President from North Central emerged after two other candidates agreed to withdraw from the race leaving Ayu as the sole contestant.

But despite the emergence of Ayu as the National PDP chairman in waiting, the North will not be barred from the presidential ticket contest. This was revealed to Punch by former pop chairman Kawu Baraje. In essence, the race will be thrown open, and the south and Northern candidates will compete fairly for the elusive ticket.

In this report, I will analyse two main reasons why a Northern candidate is favoured to win the contest.

The North has a higher number of voting delegates than the South

Under the previous dispensation of the indirect mode of primaries, the North usually benefited from having a larger number of delegates. However, that outcome is not likely to change despite the recent alteration to the Electoral law which compels all political parties to adopt a direct mode of primaries.

Why is that? The North has a bigger population which could easily translate to bigger votes in the primaries. More so, the North is more politically conscious, which means she is more likely to have more registered members of political parties than the South.

The South West is most likely to support a Northern Presidential candidate

Politics all over the world is never about sentiment but personal interest. The South West knows that a Northern Presidential candidate best serves her interest than a Southern candidate.

So, if a Northern aspirant wins the PDP presidential ticket, the party will be compelled to alter its zoning arrangement which could see South West get the chairmanship slot. This is so because of PDP’s tradition which stipulates that a presidential candidate and party chairman should not emanate from the same zone.

And with the South-West vote going to the North, added to votes from all three Northern geopolitical zones, the North will easily emerge the winner in the presidential contest, leaving the South to settle for the the Vice Presidential candidate.
