2 Reasons Why It Is Very Wrong For The North To Say It Will Continue To Rule Nigeria

It is no longer a secret that the North and Southern regions of Nigeria are already at loggerheads over where the next President of Nigeria should come from. Recall that recently, the Governors of Southern States met in Lagos, and resolved to insist on the zoning of the 2023 Presidency to the Southern region. This is due to the belief that since the incumbent President, Muhammadu Buhari, is a Northerner, it will be right to allow the South to take over the mantle of leadership in 2023.

As the issue of where the next President should come from is still being keenly debated, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), have alleged that the region will continue to rule Nigeria just like it has done in the past. As obtained from the Peoples Gazette, the Spokesperson of the group, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, went on to state that heaven will not fall if a Northerner is elected Nigerian President in 2023.

Since the report was many public, many Nigerians have continued to react differently to it. Recall that Hakeem Baba-Ahmed had alleged that the North has the necessary population needed to win elections in Nigeria. The statement has undoubtedly continued to generate reactions from different quarters. However, in my view, it is very wrong for the North to say that the region will continue to rule Nigeria. Here are my reasons:

1. The statement is capable of making people from other region feel like second-class citizens in their own country.

Considering that there have been rising calls from the South, demanding the zoning of the 2023 Presidency to the region, it is arguable that the statement referring to how the North has been ruling Nigeria, and will continue to rule may not be well-received by Southerners. It has the capacity to make them feel like second-class citizens right in their own country. This could further heat up the already tense political atmosphere, particularly as we are gradually approaching the 2023 presidential election.

2. The political atmosphere in the country at the moment does not need harsh statements that are capable of inciting people against each other.

Arguably, the political atmosphere in Nigeria at the moment does not require harsh statements. This explains why it is very wrong for the North to say that it would continue to rule Nigeria. It can be argued that such a statement could spark off heated arguments between the North and South, and, if not properly managed, may set the country on fire. Therefore, such a statement is unnecessary.

Looking at the debate over the region that should produce the next President of Nigeria, it can be argued that both regions have their points. However, it is my view that the statement by the Northern Elders about how the region has been ruling Nigeria, and will continue to rule is totally wrong and unacceptable. What we need now are words that are capable of softening everyone’s heart.
