How The North Can Avoid Clashes Over PDP Chairmanship & Presidential Ticket

The northern hegemony and interests would be protected. And one of the ways to protect the interests is to avoid a possible clash that may likely arise from the forthcoming PDP convention. The northern leaders may slug it out with one another while their top echelons are looking forward to the PDP ticket.

The northern region most especially the governors have a clear chance to grab the PDP presidential ticket and the national Chairmanship of the party. It all depends on how the region can manage its differences ahead of the next general elections.

It is certain that the PDP would pick a northern politician in the national convention. But the political party doesn't specifically say which side of the northern region would take the job. The northern region can be divided into three geopolitical zones. There are northwest, northeast and north centre. Each of the regions would want to taste power.

The Punch Newspaper reported that the screening committee wants to have three aspirants with at least one coming from each of the zones. That means the north is already divided. And there would be clashes as to whom exactly would take the seat.

The best way the northern region can use is permutation. The north central zone can be allowed to produce the national chairman. Definitely, there is a capable candidate in person of Mr. David Mark. If the former senate president from Benue State is chosen, other regions could jostle for the presidential ticket.

Now, once the issue of PDP chairmanship has been settled, the northern leaders should come together to discuss how to outsmart the southern governors who said that power should shift to south. The northern leaders need to be unanimous in their steps this time.

It is true that three top northerners would want to get the ticket once again. The north can expect Mr. Saraki, Aminu Tambuwal and the last PDP presidential candidate, Mr. Atiku Abubakar. The three persons would want to compete for the ticket of their party. And there may be a clash of interest.

If the northern elite fix their attention on David Mark or any other person from the north central zone, it means the zone won't compete for the ticket. And Mr. Saraki would be out of the race.

The remaining two subregions (northeast and northwest) can jostle for the presidential ticket. And they will represent the overall interest of the northern region.
