The Nigerian Armed forces consist of the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air force. Major General Ibrahim Attahiru is the current Nigerian Chief of Army Staff. He replaced Lt. General Tukur Buratai (rtd.) following his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari on January 26, 2021.
Many believe that the Chief of Army Staff is the highest ranking military officer of the Nigerian Armed forces but that's not true. Although, the office the Chief of Army Staff holds, is highly revered by those around him, he has an immediate superior. He reports directly to the Chief of Defence staff.
The Chief of Defence Staff is the highest ranking military officer of the Nigerian Armed Forces. The position is occupied by the most senior commissioned officer appointed by the President of Nigeria. The current Nigerian Chief of Defence staff is Major General Lucky Irabor.
Many might want to argue because both Major General Ibrahim Attahiru and Major General Lucky Irabor share almost the same pedigree when it comes to official positions held in time past. Both of them share the same rank. They are both Major Generals and have both served as theater commanders of Operation Lafiya Dole.
But, the chain of command is clear for all to see. Both the Chief of Army Staff, Chief of Air staff, Chief of Naval staff all report directly to Major General Lucky Irabor who in turn is accountable to the Minister of Defence.
However, this does not mean that the Chief of Army Staff is not a superior. When it comes to the Nigerian Army, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru is the highest ranking military officer.
So try and get the difference clearly. Major General Ibrahim Attahiru is the highest ranking Officer of the Nigerian Army while Major General Lucky Irabor is the most senior ranking military officer of the Nigerian Armed forces namely, the Air Force, Navy and the Army.
