Opinion: Can Ben Ayade Deliver Cross River State For APC In The 2023 General Elections?

It is no longer news that Cross River State Governor Ben Ayade is now with the ruling party, APC.

According to the report by Premium Times, he said the reason he defected to APC was in the interest of the people, and that having seen how committed President Muhammadu Buhari is to serving Nigerians, he wanted to join hands with him to build the country.

Ayade's reason makes sense when you understand the political history of Cross River. Since 1999, the state has always played politics with the centre. From Donald Duke to Liyel Imoke. Ben Ayade was the only one who played opposition for six years before his decision to align with the centre. And it is believed that this alignment with the centre will attract the attention of the federal government to the state, just as Donald Duke had done during his tenure.

Industrial revolution has been one of the main focus of Ayade's administration, examples are the Superhighway and Deep Seaport projects.

Some people still believe that there's more to Ayade's defection than just bringing Cross River state closer to the centre, that he made the move to secure his political future.

Recall that PDP governors in the North had alleged that the APC administration is intimidating their governors. In the report which was made by The Nation, the PDP governors claimed that Ben Ayade and Bello Matawalle did not defect to APC willingly.

Even though APC debunked the claims, this allegation from PDP still calls for deep questioning. Some people in Cross River state believe Ayade is aiming to return to the Senate after his tenure as governor, and that joining APC is one of the ways to seek federal protection.

Cross River state has been PDP's stronghold for years. Before Ayade's defection, APC had tried for long to find its feet in the state, but there was little to show for the efforts. So Ayade's defection seemed like a breakthrough for them. The next governorship election is just two years from now, and Ayade will be expected to deliver Cross River state for APC. Will he be able to meet up with the huge task?

In a state that PDP had dominated for years, winning elections at the governorship, House of Assembly and the Local Government Areas levels, APC had pulled a big surprise in the last general elections when the party won a National Assembly seat in the state. In a report which was made by Vanguard, the APC candidate Alex Egbonna had secured 29,716 votes at the polls, while the PDP candidate John Lebo had secured 26,039.

When Ayade defected to APC, he moved with many members of the state House of Assembly, Local Government Chairmen, and other political appointees. Some people believe that his defection may end the era of PDP's reign in the state.

For years, PDP's grassroots strength in the state had been impressive. But will Ayade crush PDP's stronghold in the state and give it to APC in 2023? It should be expected that now, all hands would be on deck in PDP to ensure that they take back the state from APC in 2023. So we are waiting to see how these events will play out.

Do you think APC will win the governorship election in Cross River state in 2023 now that Ayade is with them? Please share your thoughts with us.
