Has The PDP Dashed Any Hope For a Southern Presidency In 2023 With Its Recent Decision?

It is no longer a secret that the Southern region has continued to insist that the 2023 Presidency should be zoned to the region. The agitators for a Southern Presidency in 2023 have looked up to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for any hope of having the region produce President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor. However, the recent decision made by the PDP seems to pose a threat to the dream of a Southern Presidency in 2023.

It should be recalled that not long ago, the Vanguard News reported that the PDP had decided to cede its chairmanship position to the Southern region. This is coming at a time when it is no longer a secret that the party has a system that does not allow it to nominate its Chairman and Presidential candidate from the same region. With this in mind, we may begin to ask ourselves whether the PDP has already dashed any hope of having a Southern Presidency in 2023.

There is no doubt that the PDP is not the only political party through which a president can emerge. However, I am of the view that its decision to cede its chairmanship position to the South, has already dashed any hope for a Southern Presidency in 2023, when the next President of Nigeria will emerge. This is due to the likelihood that the PDP could be unwilling to have its Chairman and Presidential candidate come from the same region.

Also, with the PDP set to hand over its 2023 Presidential ticket to a Northerner, there are chances that the APC could as well opt for a Northern candidate as a counter for the PDP’s game plan. This is due to the fact that there are more electorates in the Northern region than the South, and that these populations could be unwilling to support a Southerner ahead of someone from the North.

With the decision of the PDP to give its chairmanship position to a Southerner, and perhaps, its 2023 Presidential ticket to a Northerner, coming at a time when the North is also insisting that it has 4 more years to rule before power could be returned to the South, one may not be wrong to say that Northerners are likely to massively vote for a candidate from the region. As such, even though the APC opts for a Southern candidate, chances of defeating a Northern candidate could be slim.
