Opinion: Reason Why President Buhari Could Have Stopped Handing Over To Vice President Yemi Osibanjo

President Muhammadu Buhari leaving the country for medical purposes in London is not new to Nigerians as he has been doing this since he became president.

Since the president departed for this year's medical trip on Tuesday, citizens across the nation have been reacting to why he failed to transmit power to his Vice, Yemi Osibanjo

The president's Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu said power wasn't transferred to his Vice because the president wouldn't stay long there. He said Buhari would govern from London.

President Buhari has left the nation for medical reasons several times. It started in February 2016, many times in 2017, May 2018, April 2019 and the latest March 2021.

Power was always handed over to Osibanjo until in 2018 when Osibanjo as acting president sacked the Director General, State Security Service, Lawal Daura from office. The termination of Daura's appointment was not unconnected to the siege on the National Assembly in May 2018.

Who is Lawal Daura?

He is From Kastina, the same state with President Muhammadu Buhari. Lawal Daura wasn't an ordinary government official as he was among President Buhari's kitchen cabinet. He was one of Buhari's confidants. He had retired from service before Buhari recalled him.

Sacking Daura was like removing president Buhari's brother from office and everyone knows what the consequences could be. This could be the reason why Buhari stopped entrusting his Vice with power.
