President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his deep sorrow at the death of his longtime friend and colleague Malam Isma'ila Isa Funtua.
Funtua was a lifelong supporter of the International Press Institute (IPI) and the Newspaper Owners Association of Nigeria (NPAN).
The President's message of condolence was delivered in Abuja on Monday by Malam Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Public Affairs.
President Buhari expressed his condolences to the family members, the government and people of Katsina State, and all the staff of the former NPAN chairman, especially the media industry, for the loss.
The President described the late Funtua as "much admired and respected".
According to the Nigerian leader, the death of the editor and businessman has created a great chasm, as "Funtua always supported him in his political path".
The president prayed to Allah that Funtua's soul would rest and that family, strength and power would bear the loss.
Isa Funtua, the founding editor of the Kaduna-based democratic newspaper, died Monday night.
