As Nigerians eagerly await the results of the just concluded 2023 general elections, a shocker has been thrown into the mix as the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, (LP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cancel the election.
LP's presidential candidate, Mr. Isa Aremu, made the call in a statement released by the party's spokesperson, Mr. Ebere Ifendu, citing what he termed as widespread irregularities and malpractices during the election process.
According to Mr. Aremu, the election was marred by voter suppression, vote buying, ballot box snatching, and other forms of electoral malpractice, which he claimed made the entire election process invalid.
Mr. Aremu further alleged that the election was rigged in favor of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and that the results being announced by INEC did not reflect the true wishes of the Nigerian people.
While the LP's call for the cancellation of the 2023 general election may come as a surprise to many Nigerians, it is not the first time that a political party has made such a demand.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had earlier called for the cancellation of the presidential election in 2019, citing similar irregularities and malpractices during the election process. However, the call was not heeded, and the results of the election were eventually upheld by the Supreme Court.
It is important to note that the cancellation of an election is a serious matter, and should only be considered in the most extreme circumstances. INEC has a responsibility to ensure that the election process is transparent, free and fair, and any issues that arise during the election process should be dealt with swiftly and impartially.
It is also important for political parties and their candidates to accept the results of an election, even if they do not agree with them. Democracy is built on the principle of the rule of law, and the acceptance of election results is an essential part of this.
While the LP's call for the cancellation of the 2023 general election may seem extreme, it is important for INEC to investigate any claims of irregularities and malpractices during the election process. The integrity of the election process must be maintained, and any issues that arise must be dealt with swiftly and impartially. Political parties and their candidates must also accept the results of an election, even if they do not agree with them.
