PDP: Why Southwest May End Up Not Having Consensus Candidates for Dep. Nat'l Chairman

Members of the main opposition party in Nigeria, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), may end up without being able to agree on consensus candidates for the forthcoming national convention of the opposition party.

It could be recalled that some positions of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party that will be elected at the forthcoming national convention that is slated to hold on Friday, October 30 and Saturday, October 31, 2021 have been micro-zoned to the Southwest. Among the positions of the NWC that are micro-zoned to Southwest is the position of Deputy National Chairman (South) of the party.

The position of Deputy National Chairman (South) of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) must have been micro-zoned to Southwest, probably, with the aim of compensating members of the party from the geopolitical zone who have been contesting for the position of the National Chairman of the party before it was zoned to the North.

Unfortunately, attempts to produce a consensus candidate for the position of Deputy National Chairman (South) by some members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Southwest were rebuffed as three notable leaders of the party are set to slug it out for the position, possibly, at the national convention ground.

Notably, former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola; former National Secretary of the party, Professor Wale Oladipo and the incumbent National Vice Chairman (Southwest), Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja are the three leaders of the party who are ready to take the battle to the national convention ground on Saturday, October 31, 2021.

Interestingly, Professor Wale Oladipupo is, firmly, having the backing of Osun State based Adeleke political dynasty under their leadership, Senator Ademola Adeleke. Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja is having the backing of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde while Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola who was, earlier, being supported by Governor Seyi Makinde seem to be ready to take the contest to the convention ground.
