What started as a peaceful Akwa Ibom State NMA Election ended in violence as a Personal Assistant to the returning Officer, Dr Valerie Obot brutalised Dr John Udobang, a respected and former NMA Chairman.
It all started when a supporter of Dr Ime Udoh, who contested for the position of NMA Chairman, Dr Uduak Okon was caught with 5 already ticked ballot papers trying to put them into the ballot box.
On inspection of the ballot papers, they were ticked in favor of Dr Ime Udoh.
Well meaning Doctors at the election venue raised alarm over the alleged rigging, prompting the medical elders to arrive at the scene in order to inquire what transpired.
On getting to the election venue, Dr Udobang peacefully asked what happened, however, he was repeatedly assaulted by the PA to the returning Officer, Dr Valerie Obot.
Dr Udobang’s eyeglass was broken by the said PA, and it took some Doctors and policemen present at the venue to restore peace and order.
The former NMA Chairman sustained facial injuries and trauma to the left eye.
He was subsequently taken to hospital for treatment, while the PA who is a non medical doctor has been arrested by the police and presently interrogated at the C-Division, Aka Etinan, Uyo.
Many doctors have registered their displeasure over the incident, with majority calling for the election to be cancelled because of alleged rigging.
