The Nigerian Minister of State for Labour, Productivity and Employment, Mr. Festus Keyamo (SAN), has on Sunday July 19, 2020, come out to clear the air on the confusion surrounding the process of applying and qualifying for the government approved 774,000 Specical Public Works Programme job as it regards the appropriate authority in charge.
Mr. Keyamo who on his private Twitter hand, said ‘’Nigerians should kindly disregard all messages directing them to go to National Directorate of Employment (NDE) offices to register for the Special Public Works.
‘’This will breach COVID-19 guidelines and it will not ensure we strictly achieve the 1000 per Local Government Area. The selection will be done from Local Government Area to Local Government Area, not in State’s Natonal Directorate of Employment offices’’.
While further debunking the rumor and speculations that the job programme is awarded among party faithful of the ruling APC, and could affect the mode of selection and intending beneficiaries, Keyamo said;
‘’I have not directed that forms for the Special Public Works (SPW) be distributed to the All Progressive Congress (APC) ward leaders to give to party members. Any of such list will be discountenanced.
‘’This is not an All Progressive Congress Programme, but a programme for all Nigerians. We shall only accept final lists from the State’s Selection Committees’’.
It is therefore on record that with the Minister’s clarifications around the controversies surrounding the mode of selection and qualification for the on-going 774,000 Special Public Works programme, has been put to rest, and prospective applicants are properly guided from the appropriate authority.
It will be recalled that recently, the rumor of Nigerians being advised to go to their different state’s National Directorate of Employment offices for the job application and enrollment, made round the social media.
The rumored news which read in parts, stated thus, ‘’Please go to NDE office in your State and register for 774,000 empowerment exercises going on now in the whole Federation’’.
In the rumored news which had earlier listed the different states with their NDE office addresses, indicated such requirements to include: Name, sex, Phone number, Account number, Bank name, LGA, Age, Marital status and political wards.
Nigerians should therefore maintain the original module where the state selection committees have been inaugurated accordingly and follow the due process for possible selection by finding the names and contact details of their state’s committee members through https://specialpublicworks.gov.ng/site/.
It is on record that the federal government had unveiled the details of the SPW plan to employ 1,000 persons from each of the 774 local government areas in the country. An initiative that is made to begin by October 1, 2020.
The programme is a type often used as a tool and immediate response to grinding poverty at the lowest level of societies that normally bore the brunt of such economic or health upheavals such as the dreaded coronavirus.
The federal government desire amounts to utilizing the opportunity to mitigate the impacts of the pandemic through such creation of massive jobs at the lowest level, while also achieving the maintenance of critical public and social infrastructure at the base of the economy.
