The People's Democratic Party would most likely focus on the north central zone when it's analysing its planned convention. The zone would most likely produce the next Chairman of the party later this month if the plans do not change or unforseen circumstances don't occur. The question then is who are the two likely politicians to take over the secretariat?
The PDP might not have had to scramble for a convention at this time. The removal of Mr. Uche Secondus from the office created a vacuum earlier than necessary. But since the PDP has apparently decided to let the north take the seat, two prominent politicians would want to grab the opportunity and occupy the seat.
Mr. David Mark would be the most favoured politician to take over the affairs of the party. Even all attentions seem to be on him as the noble man that the party really needs to secure victory in the 2023 general elections. The former senate president is being championed to go for the unoccupied seat.
Mr. David Mark has some advantages which he himself may not have realised. Benue State is the only PDP state in the whole north central region. That means he could use the opportunity to have an edge over other aspirants. He only needs to secure the backup of his state governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom. If the governor backs him, the rest is simple.
The second advantage is that David Mark is much closer to lots of top politicians. He was in power along with former president Goodluck Jonathan. Of course, rhe the former president can't just turn his back to the former head of the National Assembly. Meanwhile, Ike Ekweremadu may also lead top politicians from southeast to push the candidature of Mr. David Mark.
Mr. Babangida Aliyu would have been a perfect politician to take over the mantle of the People's Democratic Party. The PDP may want to opt for a former governor so as to instill discipline in the members. The former Niger State governor, Aliyu, would have been quite better. But he may be opposed by the southern politicians considering some factors.
Wike would definitely resume his opposition to the former leader of Niger State. The two men were at daggers drawn few months ago when Mr. Aliyu made some revelations over the 2015 presidential election. Wike dragged the former governor for making remarks that northern governors opposed Jonathan at that time.
In his own capacity, Mr. Aliyu is popular and he can even turn things around for the party if he is chosen as the chairman of the party. The northern politicians would prefer a Muslim because the last Chairman, Uche Secondus, is a Christian.
