Former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has made a revelation about the second term bid of the former president, Olusegun Obasanjo. Atiku made the disclosure just as the 2023 general elections are gaining more momentum and preparations are getting higher. There are two lessons to be learned from his revelation.
Mr. Atiku revealed that some governors wanted to stop the second term bid of the former president. Recall that both Obasanjo and Atiku were in power as the president and vice president of the country respectively. Atiku said he had to reject the plans of the governors who wanted to stop Obasanjo.
The first key lesson that can now be learned is that Goodluck Jonathan was not the only one that would have suffered a defeat in his bid to win the second term. Jonathan lost the 2015 presidential election which would have allowed him to stay onto power till 2019. He was the first incumbent president to lose the poll since 1999.
Recently, Mr. Babangida Aliyu, who was a former governor of Niger State, claimed that northern governors worked against the interest of the former president. The governor has not debunked his claims even though Mr. Jonah Jang disputed the claims. The fact that remains is that Mr. Jonathan lost the second term bid.
It could now be said that both Jonathan and Obasanjo would have lost their bid to rule the country for two terms. And from what the former vice president has said, it can be concluded that Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo was a bit smarter and that was why he could row the storm and come out triumphantly.
The second lesson that can be learnt is that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is a better politician who can be trusted. He knew that his former principal, Mr. Obasanjo deserved to enjoy an uninterrupted administration spanning eight years. And he staunchly worked to ensure that Obasanjo didn't suffer defeat.
Since it is now clear that Atiku Abubakar was loyal to the former president, the People's Democratic Party may have some sympathy for him and allow him to use the platform of the party to contest for the 2023 presidential election. Note that Atiku has reconciled with the former president and his current revelation could be a signal that he is preparing for the presidency race.
