Why Northern PDP Bigwigs Want 2017 Zoning Formula As They Remind PDP Of 12 Million Votes In North

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu state who is heading the zoning committee of the PDP is saddled with a difficult task that will shape political activities of the PDP during and after the October 30 national convention.

PDP members in the 6 geo-political zones have taken a position on which zone should produce the national chairman of the party but some South-East politicians appear not to be happy other zones supported a Southern national chairman of the PDP.

The region understands that the 2023 Igbo Presidency will be a mirage if the South produces the national chairman. The Northern PDP bigwigs have realised the moves of South-East politicians to see if the zoning formula can favour Igbos.

According to Nation newspaper, Northern PDP bigwigs are now insisting that PDP must use the 2017 zoning formula that produced Uche Secondus as PDP National Chairman at the same time reminding PDP of the 12 million votes in the North.

In this article, we will be discussing why the Northern PDP bigwigs are insisting on the 2017 zoning formula and the reason they reminded the PDP of 12 million votes in the North.

Why do PDP bigwigs in the North want the party to use the 2017 zoning formula?

Those who followed the 2017 national convention of the PDP will agree with me that the party adopted a zoning formula that produced Uche Secondus.

In fact, there was a list known as unity list.

The formula favoured the North because the South was given the opportunity to produce the National Chairman while the presidential ticket of the party was zoned to the North. The Northern PDP politicians are insisting on that same 2017 zoning formula even though we are in 2021.

The reason is that the PDP is seriously considering a 2023 Southern presidential candidate because of the agreement of Southern Governors and also the perceived anger in the South-East, the geo-political zone that has supported PDP since 1999 and believes the party will allow an Igbo man to become the 2023 presidential candidate of the PDP.

But the Northern PDP politicians are warning the PDP that it may lose the 12 million votes in the North if the party zones its 2023 presidential ticket to the South.

My understanding is that the PDP wants to return as the ruling party in 2023 and is considering the best formula that will make it win the 2023 presidential election.
