Immediately after Mr. Yahaya Bello's posters were spotted in some parts of the country, people began to express their views on the 2023 presidential election. Mr. Bello, the Kogi State governor, surprised millions of people with the posters seen in Port Harcourt, Yenagoa and Warri.
While many have commended him for coming out to represent the youths, others have pointed to some weaknesses that he has. As a young politician, Mr. Yahaya Bello can handle most of the problems that the country faces. But there are more qualified and experienced governors of the All Progresives Congress (APC).
The ruling All Progresives Congress controls several states in the north and in the south. But the party understands the importance of zoning formula, hence, it will put its beams on the southern part of the country in its search for a presidential candidate.
The APC controls Ebonyi, Imo, Ekiti, Ondo, Osun, Ogun and Lagos out of the 17 states in southern Nigeria. And the party must, therefore place its attention on one of the seven governors in the region.
The party doesn't have to stress itself much. Mr. Kayode Fayemi is the most suitable governor that the APC can use to retain power at the federal level.
Truly, both Fayemi and Bello are in their second term, but the former stands a better chance to pool resources together and challenge any stiff opposition from the People's Democratic Party (PDP).
For instance, Mr. Kayode Fayemi was once a minister under President Muhammadu Buhari. He was the minister of steel till 2018 when he returned to power in Ekiti State as the governor. The governor has gained experience on how to run the federal government. He spent at least two years in the cabinet.
The short time he spent under President Muhammadu Buhari has enabled him to understand the rudiments of the progressive government, hence, he can continue to hold forte and maintain the pattern of government of Muhammadu Buhari.
Secondly, for the national interest, a Christian is supposed to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari. The last president was Goodluck Jonathan and he is a Christian. After him a Muslim, Buhari, took over. By implications, a Christian should return to power after Buhari.
Luckily enough, Kayode Fayemi is a Christian and that gives him an edge over Yahaya Bello. Fayemi is a southern Christian, while Bello is a northern Muslim. It will be wrong for power to be handed over to another northern Muslim when one is currently in power.
Lastly, Mr. Fayemi is the chairman of the Governor's Forum in the country. The forum is an establishment for all the governors in the 36 states of the federation irrespective of party affiliation.
By being the chairman, Mr. Fayemi has a well knotted relationship with the APC, PDP and even APGA governors. He is as powerful as the head of the country. Even Yahaya Bello is under Fayemi when it comes to the Governor's Forum.
Having considered the three things above, it is pertinent to say that the APC should consider Fayemi as its candidate instead of Yahaya Bello.
