Why Buhari's Silence On Power Rotation Could Fuel Speculations That He Is Behind Northern Governors

The recent declaration by the Northern Governors Forum that power rotation to the South is unconstitutional has heated the polity and incited angry reactions from stakeholders in Southern Nigeria.

The Northern Governors' comment came shortly after a similar declaration by the Northern Elders Forum and Arewa Consultative Forum, who also threatened that the region will deploy its numerical might against zoning.

Many people in the South have reacted angrily to the antics of the North, fearing that it could undermine the country's democracy and fuel regional tension.

But in all of these, President Buhari has remained silent. Not a word has been uttered by the Presidency. This article will analyse reasons why Buhari's silence could fuel speculations that he is behind the agitation against power rotation.

Buhari is an elder statesman in the North, he has the power and influence to call Northern Governors to order

The reason why Buhari’s silence is not golden and could be construed as consent is that he is the leader of the nation and he should protect all-region. More so, Buhari though a Nigerian president, is also a respected leader in the North so his intervention will help to silence the noise against power rotation to the South by the Northern Governors.

As a major stakeholder in the North and a top elder statesman, if he tells the politicians to stop fighting power rotation, they are likely to obey him. So if he continues to keep quiet people might think he is in support and that is why he is quiet.

He is a major beneficiary of power rotation and should also defend the process

Buhari is perhaps one of the biggest beneficiaries of power rotation in Nigeria. If he benefitted from it to emerge President in 2015, he has a moral obligation not to desecrate the process. He must defend the sanctity of power rotation, not just because it is the right thing to do, but much more because it is justice to the South.

When it was the turn of the north in 2015, the south was in full support and played an active role in his emergence as President. So if he refuses to stand up for the interest of the South now, it could reinforce the notion that he is an ethnic warlord and that he has a hand in the Northern governors' declaration.
